Matt & Ken in Europe, Jun/ Jul 1997 [part 3]

At least we get a good view of the entrance to the Louvre.

July 02. We start our day visiting an old Roman amphitheater.
And then, at last, to Sainte-Chapelle -- Nana's favorite spot.

The lower chapel.

The upper chapel.

Then on to the Cluny Museum, built atop some ancient Roman baths.

Lots of medieval treasures.

And, at last, to the Louvre!

Even the Louvre ceilings are special (well, it was a palace)

Here she is -- the Mona Lisa!
(In spite of the rules, some people use flash, making it hard on the painting and

Here she is -- the Winged Victory of Samothrace!

And here are M&K, right in front of her.

Glass eyes!

Ancient & modern warriors! M&K are by now experts on Assyrian art, having earlier

In addition to all this culture, today offers another landmark experience: crepes with Nutella!

July 03. We take the train to Versailles -- and forget
both cameras! No matter -- disposable ones are on sale.

The gardens, from a window.

They go on and on ...

In the Hall of Mirrors.

Nana's dream comes true! Waltzing ...

M&K get a choice seat on the mini-train.

And that night it's off to Germany, and onward to Austria!

Life has been going too fast -- but a long train ride offers some time for journal-keeping.

July 04. Salzburg, Germany!

More churches.

More squares and fountains.

Atop the fortress/ castle.

Not as elegant as Versailles, but still regal.

Kenny is chosen to open a special door.

July 05. The increasingly rainy weather makes many of Salzburg's attractions impossible, but we figure salt mines deep in the mountains should be the same rain or shine -- so, take the train to Hallein, and a gondola from there.

On the way back, there's a little street theater.

But in Salzburg it just rained and rained ...

so ...
