June 23, 1997: Matt & Ken arrive!
... tired, but smiling
... and quickly take a tour of Copenhagen by canal.
Passing the Little Mermaid.
On the nearby pedestrian street, Matt measures himself
against the world's tallest man. Still a way to go.
The town hall square is at the end of that street,
and in a fountain a bull battles a dragon.
The town hall.
Night begins to fall over Nyhavn.
The brothers watch from the balcony ...
... and the "witch" is burned, in observance of Midsummer.
The brothers ignore jet lag and join the throngs on the street,
where Ken's camera captures the blaze close-up.
June 24 (Nana's birthday). The morning begins with a walk, starting at Rosenberg
Castle, one former residence of the royal family -- now a museum.
The royal horses were properly dressed.
The crown jewels are on display.
Upstairs, the royal rooms are a bit gloomy, but still elegant.
Nearby, at the former grangerie, the Royal Guard prepares to leave its barracks.
It's time for the changing of the guard.
The fresh group arrives at the present palace, to relieve their comrades.
It takes ages.
At the peculiar modern columns for the royal compound behind
... then off to the Ripley Believe It or Not Museum, etc.
June 25. M&K run up the ramp of the Round Tower.
Peter the Great galloped up these same stones on horseback.
Ken's camera records the view from the top.
Then we explore yet another former palace, not far away.
The garden of the Royal Library.
We had wanted to climb the church tower -- but, alas,
the whole church was closed for repairs.
Another great twisting tower, composed of the intertwined tails of four dragons.
The night of June 25, M&K went to Tivoli, and stayed until the fireworks.
No photos, but some old ones taken by Nana on an earlier trip are offered as mementos.
They rode everything!
June 26. At last a little sun! We take the hydrofoil to
Malmo, Sweden, and begin another canal tour there.
A Chinese restaurant on a boat.
Through lovely parks.
The city of Malmo is most picturesque!
Even the pharmacy is definitely not your standard American sort.
M&K join a statuesque street parade.
An old fortress is now a museum complex.
Famous defender of Malmo.
Famous ghoul of Malmo.
A model of the original fortifications.
The Science & Technology Museum.
... Somehow we failed to photograph the dwarf marmosets in the Museum of
Natural History ... surely the world's most adorable animals.
On our way back, we find the fountain we had admired from the boat.
A horse show is about to start ... but so is the boat back.
So, we return to lovely Nyhavn.
The next day is a washout ... big thunderstorms. We play a lot of cards.
